On 28 June, the lower house of the Dutch parliament passed a bill<\/a> to help former Dutch citizens living abroad who lost their Dutch citizenship on 1 April 2013 by neglecting to have\u00a0a passport issued to them in 10 years. If this bill also passes the upper house of Parliament, then after the bill is signed into law and takes effect, these former Dutch citizens will have one year<\/em> to file an option request at a Dutch embassy or consulate to get their Dutch citizenship back.<\/p>\n

It is important to note that this bill IS NOT YET LAW. But it seems likely that it will be passed by\u00a0the upper chamber.<\/p>\n

It is also important to note that this bill would not benefit former Dutch citizens abroad who lost their Dutch citizenship for other reasons, such as voluntarily obtaining a foreign nationality, or who lost it by the passage of time prior to 1 April 2013.<\/p>\n
